 Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

First of all, let me say that I think it's wonderful when parents take an interest in what their children are doing online. It is with you in mind that I write this letter.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Vanessa, I am 20 years old, a former homeschooler and current college student (distance classes) living in Texas, recently married (8/29/09), and I am the administrator of this forum. I created this forum when I was 14 years old, just for fun. It has turned into something much more than I originally expected. I have made some wonderful friends, and view my members as a sort of extended family.

Over the life of this forum, I have received letters from parents, sometimes thanking me for giving their daughter an opportunity for this interaction, and sometimes bringing up security or content concerns. I will be addressing those concerns here.

1. Security:
a. The information I require to make an account - I require that an email be sent to the appropriate address with the person's name (first is fine, it doesn't need to be a full name), age and date of birth (this is required by Proboards), email address and password. I cannot and will not make an account without this information. Normally, the person would be able to fill out this information in a form and have an account created immediately, but I do not allow this, because I need a way to control who gets a membership. Mainly I do this to make sure that all the members are, in fact, female. Think of it as an extra security feature.

b. Your child's personal safety - I never sell anyone's email address or personal information. When they reveal about themselves as a member of this forum is not under my control, but I do not require anything beyond the original signup information and that is kept private. All members have the option of hiding their age and email address, and they do not have to reveal their location or any personal information unless they wish too.

c. Hidden boards - The following boards are hidden from guests: 'Prayer Requests and Answered Prayers', 'Dear Somebody', 'Body Works', 'You think You've got Problems?', 'Boy Crazy', and 'Photo Album'. That means that only members can view the content within those boards. This is to protect the member's privacy.

2. Content:
a. Debates - There is a board devoted to the debating of various subjects. As is unavoidable when debating, tempers sometimes flare, but the moderators and I do our best to keep everything under control. Everyone is generally very polite, even when they have differing opinions, and they always apologize if there are hurt feelings. It is a part of the 'family' characteristic of this forum. There are some debates about sensitive issues, such as homosexuality and abortion... but these are kept clean and there is no "bashing" of any kind allowed. I look at these debates as a chance to decide on what you believe about various issues, and learn how to defend them in the "real world". If you as a parent find the debates to be inappropriate for your child, you are welcome to ask that your child not participate in them, or wait until your child is older before allowing them to join. Let me remind you that the debates are strictly moderated.

b. Religion - There are three boards relating to religion on this forum. These are:

1. The Christianity board - (where Christians can talk about what they believe), and a sub-board under that for Christian debates, which are more like discussions about the different aspects of Christianity and the different denominations.

2. Prayer Requests and Answered Prayers - Exactly what the title says. Here, members can ask for prayer and update us on answers to prayer.

3. The World Religions board - This board is for the discussion of religions other than Christianity. A few members of other faiths requested it. It also has a sub-board for debate. As with all the debate boards, this board is strictly moderated.

A note about the religion boards: Questions to other members about their faith are allowed and encouraged in some circumstances. I think it is important, as a Christian, to understand what other people believe so that we can know how to begin witnessing to them. It is with this in mind that I created these boards. But I do not allow anyone to try to "convert" anyone else. A person's faith is their own decision, and nobody can make that choice for them. So while I allow people to share information about what they believe, there is no "guilt tripping" or coercion allowed.

c. Sexual content - I try to keep this to a minimum. I don't allow anything to be discussed that I would not feel ok about having my little sister or my parents read. Sometimes sensitive issues are brought up, but I delete anything that is too descriptive, and make sure that all replies are within certain guidelines.

d. Advertisements - At the top of every page, there is a bar with several ads. These ads are powered by Google, and are there so that Proboards can keep this forum hosting service free. Without those ads, this and many other forums would not be here. Sometimes (but very rarely) the ads could be considered inappropriate. But I have no control over what those ads contain, hence this disclaimer. If the ads are a problem, I apologize.

In closing, I would like to say that I have striven to make this forum a place where teen girls can interact with other teen girls in a clean, safe, and friendly environment on the internet. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions, please email me, I will do my best to accommodate you. I look forward to hearing from you.

- Vanessa
